About the Recipe
This is a recipe that we found thanks to the Pioneer Woman. It’s a warm, delicious, glutinous breakfast of pure comfort that we usually serve with our strawberry freezer jam and some maple syrup.

Ingredients
1 loaf of crusty French bread or whole grain bread
8 eggs
2 cups whole milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp pure vanilla extract
2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
Topping:
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/2 cup butter
Preparation
Step 1
Grease a 9x13 baking pan or Dutch oven with butter. Tear the bread into chunks, or cut into cubes, and evenly distribute in the pan.
Step 2
Crack the eggs in a big bowl. Whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla. Pour evenly over the bread.
Step 3
Cover the pan tightly and store in the fridge until needed (overnight preferably). Or you can make it and bake it right away.
Step 4
In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg for the topping. Add the butter and using knives or a pastry cutter, mix together until the mixture resembles fine pebbles.
Step 5
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Remove the pan containing the bread mixture from the fridge and evenly sprinkle the topping on the top. Bake for 45 minutes for a softer, more bread pudding texture or for 1 hour or more for a firmer, crispier texture. When the center of the bread mixture is raised and puffy, it is ready. Serve with butter, fresh jam and maple syrup!
